How am I matched into a tutoring group?

All our tutors must visit their family in pairs or small groups.  When signing up for the Refugee Tutoring program, you will be asked to indicate whether you would like to be placed into a tutoring group with a particular person.  These preferences are accommodated wherever possible, and about half of our tutors request that they be placed in tutoring groups with friends, colleagues, family members or partners. Other tutors also meet their new tutoring partners at the Intake Sessions.

The remainder do not know of another person they would like to tutor with, and we match them with other available tutors.  In these situations, we ask tutors to provide us with two pieces of information:

  • what days and times they will be available to tutor; and
  • what region of Brisbane they are able to tutor in.

This information is used to match tutors into convenient tutoring groups.  If the information changes while you are waiting to start tutoring, it is important that you let us know as soon as possible so that the tutor grouping process runs smoothly.

If you would prefer to tutor in a group of three to ensure that at least two tutors are able to attend each tutoring session, we also ask you to indicate this when signing up to the program.

You will only be matched into a tutoring group and with a family once you have received your blue card and are ready to start tutoring.  The Volunteer Coordinator will email you once you have received your blue card to either confirm your requested tutoring group or to introduce you to a potential tutoring partner.

If being introduced to a potential tutoring partner, you will be provided with their email address and should communicate with them as soon as possible to ensure that you are happy to tutor together and are available for tutoring at the same time.  If this grouping is satisfactory, one of you will need to let the VoRTCS team know so that the details of your refugee family can be sent through.
