Information and Intake Sessions

To become a tutor, you will have to attend a Volunteer Interview and three compulsory training sessions (Session 1, 2, 3).

In the Volunteer Interview, you will meet our friendly staff and see where and how we work. You will receive a handbook covering training session 1's outline which you can read through before registering online. You will be required to fill out a blue card application and a volunteer details form, assisting our team to ensure you are matched with other volunteers with similar availabilities, residence and personalities. Feel free to ask us any questions you may like to have answered before registering for the training sessions. This opportunity is aimed at giving you some information about the program to help you make up your mind if you would like to join.

In the first session, you will be provided with some basic information about the Refugee Tutoring program as well as an overview of how VoRTCS operates.  Experienced tutors will also be present to tell you about their experiences in tutoring their refugee families and to answer any questions that you might have about what tutoring is like or the Refugee Tutoring program in general. There will be some preparation for this session and also some homework afterwards.

In the second session, units 2 and 3 of the course are provided. This generally takes place one or two weeks after the first session. You will fill out the final paperwork and be provided with information about learning language, using language, and working with children including child safety and risk management strategies - and more homework. At the end of the session, an explanation of how you will be match to your group and refugee family will be provided.
