Teaching numeracy
Many students will have missed out on basic foundational numeracy skills.  In particular, where the student has not had formal schooling previously, their grasp of numeracy and mathematics may be fairly tenuous.  Hands-on, concrete reinforcing of basic numeracy skills may still be needed even for high school students.

The more time you can spend reinforcing numeracy concepts, the easier it will be for a student to pick up new concepts in school.  You don’t need to be a maths whiz to teach numeracy.  You can introduce concepts of numbers and relative size, weight, frequency etc to any conversation.

The main tips for teaching numeracy are:
  • use concrete reinforcing of topics at early levels, rather than abstract concepts, eg use matchsticks to count out basic addition at first
  • be patient, and be prepared to repeat the task many times over
  • use repetition to reinforce concepts, particularly between different weeks
  • having fun – there are many different, practical activities that can be done to make maths interesting!
