What do we take to our first session?
It is generally not a good idea to go along to your first session with a lesson plan and a huge pile of resources.  While you should take along some items to show that you are there to tutor, the first few sessions should be more of an opportunity for you to get to know your family’s level of English and gauge their needs.  Without doing this, you will not be able to effectively address these needs.

We would recommend taking along a few exercise books and some paper, as well as a pencil case containing basic stationery.  A few reading materials may also come in handy, in case your family want to get straight into learning!

Remember to take along the information sheet that you will be provided with to give your family.  You might also like to take along a small calendar to mark the day and time you will be returning, so that your family will know when to expect you next.

If you have some photos of your own family, house or hobbies handy, consider taking them along also to initiate discussion and allow your family to get to know you better.
