You should not attempt to advise your family on legal issues unless you
are a qualified lawyer practising in that area. There are
organisations that will provide free legal help to low-income families
in various areas, including immigration law, family law, criminal law
and general civil matters.
The following organisations may be able to provide assistance:
Refugee Civil Law Clinic (RCLC)
RCLC provides free legal advice and assistance to refugees, humanitarian entrants, asylum seekers and temporary protection visa h olders in the areas of: fine, infringement notices and penalties; debts, loan agreements and bankruptcy; consumer issues; housing and tenancy issues; Centrelink; guardianship issues; employment; police powers; and discrimination.
RCLC cannot provide direct assistance with immigration, family or criminal law problems, but can assist with referrals to alternative service providers.
RCLC is run with the assistance of volunteer lawyers from Corrs Chambers Westgarth and is held at the Multicultural Development Association (MDA) on 512 Stanley Street, South Brisbane.
RCLC runs fortnightly on Mondays from 2 pm to 4 pm.
