When does tutoring take place?

As tutors, you can choose how much time to spend with your refugee family each week based on their needs, though a minimum of one hour is required.  Most of our tutors probably visit for about an hour and a half each week, to allow time to chat to their family. More than two hours is not expected.

Many of our tutors work full-time and tutor at the end of their workdays -after work or in the evening. Others study or work part-time, and tutor during the day or after school, and some tutors visit their refugee families on weekends.  You can let us know when you are able to tutor a family, and your schedule will be accommodated. The more flexible your timing can be, the sooner we'll be able to match you with others and get you started.

You will need to ensure that your refugee family is happy with the day and time that you visit each week, though we will match you with a family who will be able to accommodate your schedule if your tutoring times are not flexible.  Your tutoring time can be changed temporarily or permanently if needed, by discussion with your family.

If you can’t make it a particular week, you simply ring your refugee family and let them know that you won’t be there, and either:

  • arrange an alternate time to visit that week; or
  • let them know that you will see them at the usual time next week.

There is no need to let your coordinator know that you can’t make a particular tutoring session.  All arrangements are made between your tutoring group and your family. If you need to go on holidays, and do not have a spare tutor in your group, most tutors suspend tutoring until returning from leave. Tutoring cannot continue unless at least two tutors are available.
