Tutoring almost exclusively occurs at the family's home to make it easier for them to participate.
When
you sign up for the Refugee Tutoring program, we ask you to let us know
which regions of Brisbane you are available to travel to for tutoring. We endeavour to match you
up with a family who lives in these areas.
We do have families on our waiting list from all over Brisbane.
However, the greatest need is from newly settled refugee families in areas such as:
North: Chermside, Zillmere, Bracken Ridge.
South West: Inala, Acacia Ridge, Sunnybank, Coopers Plains, Eight Miles Plains.
West: Ipswich, Collingwood Park, Goodna
South: Logan, Woodridge, Beenleight, including suburbs such as Creastmead, Marsden, Slack's Creek, Kingston and Waterford.
These are our high-need areas for tutors. If you are able to visit one of these areas, we can match you with a family sooner.
There are also other
suburbs, such as New Farm, Bulimba and St Lucia, where we are unlikely
to find refugee families. If you do live in those suburbs, don’t worry
– you can still tutor, we just might need to ask you to travel a little
bit further to visit your family.
On your first visit, someone
who knows the family will take you to their house and introduce you to
them. From then on, you will visit their house each week for
tutoring.
