Who does the program assist?

The families involved in the VoRTCS Refugee Tutoring program come from a number of different countries and regions.  All families and individuals on valid humanitarian visas are eligible to participate in the Refugee Tutoring program.

Many of these have recently been resettled into Australia after spending some time (frequently a number of years) in one of the refugee camps.

The majority of our families are on permanent protection visas (PPV’s), and were resettled in South-East Queensland under the Australian Government’s Humanitarian Visa Program.  They have left their home country due to persecution, war or instability and have applied for a visa off-short, generally from a refugee camp.  Others have been sponsored by family members already in Australia.  All of these families are able to stay in Australia permanently.

Some of the refugee families that we assist have one or both parents deceased or missing.  In some situations, an older sibling is caring for their younger siblings.  We try to place tutors with these families as a matter of priority.

Where tutors have a preference for working with a particular age-group, for example if the tutor would prefer to work with adults or with primary school children, we try to accommodate this preference where possible.
